Principles of the International Red Cross Movement

All components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement — the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the National Societies — are guided in their work by a common set of fundamental principles.

Independence

The International Movement is independent. While National Societies support their governments in humanitarian activities and comply with the laws of their countries, they must always maintain their autonomy in order to act in accordance with the principles of the International Movement.

Impartiality

The International Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religion, social status, or political opinions. Its sole aim is to relieve human suffering, giving priority to those in greatest need.

Unity

There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all and carry out its humanitarian work throughout the entire territory.

Neutrality

In order to maintain the trust of all, the International Movement does not take sides in armed conflicts or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature.

Voluntary Service

It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

Universality

The International Movement is worldwide. All National Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping one another.

Humanity

The International Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, seeks in all circumstances — both internationally and nationally — to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Its purpose is to protect life and health and ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and lasting peace among all peoples.
